FINLAND?S ice experts want to see tougher rules for navigation through the Gulf of Finland when it is icebound. They are concerned that the increased number of large ships, especially oil tankers bound to and from Russia, do not have navigators with experience in tough ice conditions and this could lead to a serious incident.
A CONSORTIUM of Finnish training and maritime businesses have established IceTrain, a specialised training course to provide international crews with little or no ice experience an introduction to the dangers and knowledge needed for safer ice navigation.
